Death by Mayo

A sad story.
Yesterday I made myself a simple lettuce and tomato sandwich on a roll with mayo.  I should have rinsed the knife that had mayo on it but instead I threw it into the dishpan and later would rinse before putting it in the dishwasher.
Later I looked in the dishpan and saw there was something on the knife that looked like a fly.  Oh, no! I picked up the knife and saw it was my friend...yes, a fly, that wasn't moving...didn't fly away...and didn't see his wings or legs moving, so I carefully lifted him off the knife coated with the mayo and before I could do anything else it fell off the knife and onto the floor and area rug in many colors.  I'll bet you know what I'm going to say next. I tried to pick it up off the floor but I couldn't find it.
It/he was small and I just didn't see him as I felt around the rug where I saw it fall.

I have a philosophy - everything has a right to live.  I don't kill insects - I am a Master at catching them and putting them outside where they belong. I open the back door off the dining area and the flies usually gravitate to the screened storm door and all I have to do is open it and they fly away...to freedom...but  he's gone.  : (
If he were still alive he'd be buzzing around me as I sit on the couch watching TV or eating supper...so I know it wanted food.  That's why he found the mayonnaise-coated knife and his legs got stuck and couldn't fly away, or it died eating it! Poor thing...it was around the house for a couple of weeks but we had a lot of rain so I never tried opening the door to let it out, or subconsciously wanted it to stay around.

I have no pets anymore and it gives me some kind of connection and comfort, like the mouse/mice we have running around the house.  I know...but we have humane traps and with peanuts and peanut butter we set them and when caught let them outside.  They run under the back deck and there are so many places they can find to live and can survive, especially since we feed the birds and squirrels back and front every morning, so they will always have food if they stay around.
I learned a lesson - wipe the silverware after using.
So sorry, little fly friend. I hope you are in a happy place. I miss you.  : (
